Why are some apps slower after upgrading my Samsung Galaxy S5 to Android 5.0 (Lollipop)?

Please note that the advice below is applicable to Android 5.0 features and is not exclusively specific to Samsung devices.

1) After upgrading to Android 5.0 Lollipop, some applications appear to be slower than others. Why is this?

A) There is a new file format applied on the Android platform with this update. Due to the changes, each installed application must be updated. Recently used apps are updated first during the first reboot after the upgrade to Lollipop. It is likely that some apps are not yet fully updated to the new format.

When re-opening some apps for the first time they may take slightly longer to open due to the optimisation process required with Lollipop. The application speed will be normalised after file format updating.

2) After upgrading to Android 5.0 Lollipop, the time for installing applications seems to be longer than before. Why is this?

A) Due to the updates to the application file format with Lollipop, the new file formats will take longer to install but will have higher performance.
