How to use the Multi Window function in Android Pie

The Android Multi Window function allows you to open and use two apps simultaneously by splitting the screen view. This function, also called split screen, has been optimised under Android Pie. Using a Galaxy S9 as an example, we will explain how to easily call and use the Multi Window function.

How to select apps to use in Multi-Window view

Please note: The apps selected must support Multi Window function.

1 Tap the Recents apps button.

2 Tap the respective app icon above the wanted app window.

3 Tap “Open in split screen view”.

Please note: If you want to change your selection of the first app for the Multi Window view, tap the cross icon (X) at the top of the screen and select a new app.

5 Swipe left or right to find the second app you wish to open and tap it.

6 The second app will be displayed in the lower half of the screen and the first app in the upper half.

7 You can now use and work with both apps.

The blue area of the dividing line between the apps indicates whether the upper or lower app is currently selected.

  • If the blue line is above the grey line, the app in the upper half is selected.
  • If the blue line is below the grey line, the app in the lower half is selected.

If you press and hold the middle mark of the dividing line, you can move it up or down to change the size of the selected app.

If you move the entire separator up or down, you will switch to full screen mode and exit Multi Window function.
